Christmas Ideas Guide

Decorating the Christmas Tree in the new Millenium

The decorations for Christmas Trees have changed quite a bit in the last few years!

One of the big changes is the number of lights and how they are put on the Christmas tree. The formula for calculating the number of lights the tree should have is as follows:

Take the height of the Christmas tree in feet (not including the height of the tree stand), deduct 2 and multiply by 100.

For example if you have a 7 ft tree the formula would be 7-2=5 --- 5 x 100=500.

The strands need to be woven into the Christmas tree mostly horizontally, covering the branches from the trunk to the tip of each branch. This is an arduous task. If retro-fitting an older artificial Christmas tree this task can be made into a one-time chore by using a strand of lights for each ring of branches. That way the lights can be left on the branches when the tree is taken apart.

Another change is the use of big bows made of several wide ribbons. These ribbons can either be Christmas motifs or match your décor (or even be a combination of both). Nestle the bows nicely into the Christmas tree, in between the branches, they should not just be perched on the tips. Let several feet of the ribbons trail out of the bow and weave through the branches. The bows must be big enough not to look skimpy.

For trees taller than 6 feet let the size of the tree guide you toward the
size of the bows. Bows of 7 inch diameter for example, look good on a
7 ft. tree. There is a limit to this rule of thumb, though: An 18 inch bow looks too big even on an 18 foot Christmas tree.

Now apply a theme to the Christmas tree! This theme can be as individual as desired. Some examples:

  • Family member Christmas tree: Every member of the family supplies ornaments and decorations reflecting his or her interests, personalities, favorite colors, etc.
  • Natural as the Outdoors Christmas tree: Fill in with pine cones, dried leaves (fall is the perfect time to collect leaves of different colors and textures). Add little twigs with berries (alternately replicas of these are available in craft stores). Craft stores can also be a good source for birds nests and replicas of our feathered friends to place in this tree.
  • Color scheme Christmas tree: This tree would be decorated with ornaments and decorations in different shades of one color. Pick a color that complements the décor of the room and look for ornaments and lights to match.

These are just a few ideas. There are now so many options and so many products available that each tree can be as individual as its owner with just a little effort.
